What is Joint Zone used for?
Joint Zone capsules are a dietary supplement used to help maintain healthy joints and cartilage and to help prevent the progression of degenerative joint disease like osteoarthritis, commonly known as wear and tear. Cartilage plays an important role in providing a cushioning effect for bones at the joints and this protects the bones from rubbing against each other. As the joints age, or as a result of injury, cartilage degenerates and this can result in osteoarthritis, where bones are no longer cushioned, causing pain and inflammation, which leads to limited mobility of that joint. Joint Zone helps protect cartilage from degradation due to aging and natural wear and tear and also due to sports injury, by providing nutritional support for healthy joints to maintain cartilage and help reduce any further degradation. Joint Zone capsules also help protect against brittle bones, associated with aging.
How does Joint Zone work?
Joint Zone capsules contain a combination of glucosamine and chondroitin which are nutritional building blocks for normal cartilage formation. Glucosamine is an amino sugar that is naturally produced by the body as the first step in the hexosamine biosynthesis pathway, and is a precursor for making glycosaminoglycans (GAG). These are complex carbohydrate molecules that combine with protein to form proteoglycans such as chondroitin or form other molecules like hyaluronan which is a component of synovial fluid that lubricates joints. GAGs are important components of connective tissue particularly cartilage and tendons as they are part of the extracellular matrix that gives tensile strength to cartilage and they attract water molecules, which keeps cartilage hydrated and flexible and this helps to maintain its role as the “shock absorbers” of the joints. The combination of glucosamine and chondroitin in Joint Zone helps slow the progression of destruction of articular cartilage (cartilage covering bones) caused by wear and tear of aging joints that can result in osteoarthritis, cartilage degeneration and erosion of the bone normally protected by cartilage1,2,3,4,5. During the aging process the ability to produce these important building blocks for joints is impaired and levels of GAGs are reduced, therefore supplementation with Joint Zone can help restore levels of these joint nutrients so that the body is less dependent on production of glucosamine and chondroitin. Clinical studies have shown that chondroitin (alone or in combination with glucosamine) was better than placebo in improving pain and preventing reduction in minimum joint space width in joints affected by osteoarthritis6. It has also been shown that glucosamine and chondroitin improve pain in knees with osteoarthritis and has an excellent safety profile3. In a randomised controlled trial comparing the efficacy of the combination of chondroitin and glucosamine with the anti-inflammatory celecoxib, it was shown that that the combination of chondroitin plus glucosamine was non-inferior to celecoxib in reducing pain in osteoarthritis, and therefore had comparable efficacy as a treatment for osteoarthritis7. Joint Zone capsules also contain cholecalciferol or Vitamin D3, a natural prohormone of calcitriol (1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3), which is the active metabolite of vitamin D and is synthesised in the skin by the action of sunlight; also obtained in the diet from oily fish, eggs and dairy products. Calcitriol is converted from Vitamin D3 in the kidneys into a hormone that regulates calcium metabolism by controlling absorption of calcium and phosphate by the intestine and their secretion by the kidneys. If there is a lack of Vitamin D3 then calcium levels may become low and this contributes to brittle bones and to osteoporosis. Cholecalciferol in Joint Zone capsules help promote absorption of calcium from the intestines and, thereby, help make bones stronger and more resistant to fracture.
What does Joint Zone contain?
Joint Zone capsules contain the active ingredients glucosamine (sulphate, potassium chloride complex 750mg) and bovine chondroitin sulphate (250mg). They also contain Cholecalciferol (200IU).
Treating osteoarthritis with Joint Zone

What are the side effects of Joint Zone?
The most commonly reported side effects when taking Joint Zone capsules include: gastro-intestinal disturbance like gas, loose stools or nausea, also since glucosamine is a sugar it could contribute to fluctuating sugar and insulin levels in diabetics.
When should Joint Zone not be used?
You should not use Joint Zone if you:
- are allergic to glucosamine or chondroitin or any ingredients in Joint Zone
- are allergic to shellfish
- are pregnant or are breastfeeding
- have high levels of Vitamin D
- have gout, high blood pressure or kidney disease, without discussion with your doctor
- have diabetes without discussion with your doctor
- are taking warfarin
What medications interact with Joint Zone?
Glucosamine in Joint Zone has the potential to interact with the anticoagulant warfarin, and therefore, Joint Zone should either not be taken while you are taking warfarin or only after discussion and instruction from your doctor.
How should Joint Zone be taken?
You should take your Joint Zone capsules with a glass of water, 1-2 capsules daily with food or as directed by your healthcare professional. You should continue to take your Joint Zone capsules regularly and they can be taken long-term.

Missed dose of Joint Zone
If you miss a dose of Joint Zone take it as soon as you remember, unless it is time to take the next dose, then skip the missed dose. Do not take a double dose.
How should Joint Zone be stored?
You should store your Joint Zone below 25°C in a cool dry place.
