Accupril general information

What is Accupril used for?

Accupril 20, is used to treat essential hypertension, which is high blood pressure when at rest, by lowering blood pressure to normal resting levels and reducing feelings of breathlessness on exertion. This reduces risk of stroke, heart attack and kidney disease. Accupril 20, is also used to treat congestive heart failure, by helping weakened heart muscles pump more efficiently. Accupril 20 can be used on its own or with a diuretic, which helps get rid of excess water that is retained in body tissues and can cause swelling (oedema).

How does Accupril work?

Accupril 20 is an antihypertensive medication and belongs to a group of drugs called ACE (Angiotensin Converting Enzyme) inhibitors, which prevent the formation of angiotensin II, a chemical which causes narrowing of the blood vessels. This allows blood vessels to relax and widen reducing the force needed by the heart to pump blood around the body, reducing its workload and lowering blood pressure.

What Accupril doses are available?

Accupril tablets are available to order and buy online from Inhouse Pharmacy in doses of 5mg, 10mg and 20mg, as packs of 30 tablets.

What does Accupril contain?

The active ingredient of Accupril 20 is the ACE inhibitor quinapril which widens blood vessels and lowers blood pressure. Accupril 20 tablets also contain magnesium carbonate, lactose, gelatin, crospovidone, magnesium stearate, candelilla wax and Opadry Y-5-0920.

Accupril for treating high blood pressure

Accupril 20 contains quinapril, an ACE inhibitor, which is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) by widening blood vessels and lowering resting blood pressure. This helps the heart to cope better and reduces symptoms of breathlessness on exertion. You may also be prescribed a diuretic to help get rid of excess water that is retained in your tissues and can cause swelling (oedema), as a result of high blood pressure.

Accupril for treating congestive heart failure

Accupril 20 contains quinapril, an ACE inhibitor, which is used to widen blood vessels and reduce the force needed for the heart to pump blood around the body. This helps weakened heart muscle, such as in congestive heart failure, to work more efficiently and reduces symptoms of breathlessness on exertion. You may also be prescribed a diuretic to help get rid of excess water that is retained in your body tissues and can cause swelling(oedema), as a result of congestive heart failure.

Accupril with other medications

Along with Accupril 20mg you may be prescribed other medications for your hypertension or congestive heart failure, such as a diuretic, to help reduce other symptoms of your condition. This may cause your blood pressure to fall too much and make you feel faint.

What are the side effects of Accupril?

Accupril is generally well tolerated but it is always possible that you may experience side effects such as, dizziness, headache, tiredness, cough, skin rash, altered taste, nausea, abdominal pain. More serious side effects are less common and include rapid heart rate (tachycardia) and swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue or throat. You may have low blood pressure, particularly if are also taking a diuretic, and this may make you feel faint.

How should Accupril be taken?

You should take Accupril 20mg tablets with a glass of water preferably on an empty stomach (1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal) as a high-fat meal can affect the way Accupril is absorbed into the blood. The dose that you take depends on what your doctor has prescribed and can be taken once or twice daily. Accupril helps improve your condition but does not cure it therefore you should continue to take Accupril for as long as your doctor recommends. Accupril may take a few weeks to lower blood pressure and you should keep taking Accupril even if you feel well, as often there are no symptoms for high blood pressure.
