Foratec general information

What is Foratec used for?

Foratec Rotacaps are is used for maintenance treatment to manage and relieve symptoms of asthma, like wheezing, tightness of the chest and shortness of breath and should be used together with an inhaled anti-inflammatory “preventer” asthma medication to keep the airways open. Foratec is a long-acting bronchodilator and therefore is particularly useful to help manage exercise induced asthma and nocturnal symptoms in asthma (such as night time cough). Foratec Rotacaps are also used to treat and prevent symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) for long-term-therapy.

How does Foratec work?

Foratec Rotacaps contain formoterol, a potent selective long-acting beta 2-agonist that acts as a bronchodilator, working on the small airways of the lungs (bronchioles). Formoterol in Foratec Rotacaps binds to the beta 2 receptors in the airways of the lungs and causes the muscles in the walls of the bronchioles to relax, which widens the airways. This reduces bronchospasm (narrowing or constriction of the airways) in conditions where there is reversible airways obstruction, relieving symptoms of asthma such as tightness of the chest, wheezing and shortness of breath. Formoterol in Foratec Rotacaps begins to act rapidly within 1−3 minutes of inhalation and lasts for approximately 12 hours.

What does Foratec contain?

Foratec Rotacaps contain the active ingredient formoterol fumarate, which is a long-acting bronchodilator that relieves bronchospasm, as a dry inhalation powder that is used to treat asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Each rotacap delivers 12mcg per actuation into your lungs when you inhale.

Treating asthma with Foratec

Foratec Rotacaps contain formoterol, a long-acting bronchodilator that is used to prevent symptoms of bronchospasm (narrowing or constriction of the airways) in asthma and is particularly useful to help manage exercise induced asthma and nocturnal symptoms in asthma (such as night time cough). Formoterol in Foratec is a beta 2 agonist that acts on the small airways of the lungs (bronchioles) and works as bronchodilator by relaxing the muscles to widen the airways. This reduces bronchospasm relieving symptoms of asthma such as tightness of the chest, wheezing and shortness of breath and because it is long-acting Foratec provides relief for up to 12 hours. Foratec Rotacaps are usually combined with an inhaled corticosteroid or “preventer”, which is an anti-inflammatory asthma medication for long-term asthma management.

Foratec for for bronchospasm

Foratec Rotacaps contain formoterol, a long-acting beta 2-agonist that acts as a bronchodilator working on the small airways of the lungs (bronchioles). Formoterol in Foratec binds to the beta 2 receptors in the airways of the lungs and causes the muscles in the walls of the bronchioles to relax, which widens the airways. This reduces bronchospasm (constriction of the airways) relieving symptoms such as tightness of the chest, wheezing and shortness of breath that occur in asthma and other obstructive lung diseases like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and chronic bronchitis, for up to 12 hours.

What are the side effects of Foratec?

The most commonly reported side effects when taking Foratec Rotacaps include: headache, tachycardia (rapid heart beat), tremor (shaky or tense feeling), dizziness, palpitations, muscle cramps. A less common but more serious side effect is hypokalaemia, which is low levels of blood potassium.

What is paradoxical bronchospasm?

If this happens you should inform your doctor and take their advice.
