Cardizem CD 180mg (Diltiazem)

Cardizem general information

What is Cardizem used for?

Cardizem capsules 180mg are used to treat hypertension, which is high blood pressure when at rest. Although there are usually no other symptoms, high blood pressure increases risk of cardiovascular disease. Cardizem CD capsules reduce the risk of stroke and heart attack, by lowering blood pressure to normal resting levels. Cardizem CD can be used alone or in combination with other antihypertensive medications such as diuretics. Cardizem capsules 180mg are also used to treat chronic stable angina, to prevent symptoms like chest pain and to prevent heart attack; also to treat angina due to coronary artery spasm, which is an acute angina attack which can occur at rest.

How does Cardizem work?

Cardizem capsules 180mg contain diltiazem, which is a calcium channel blocker that inhibits the inflow of calcium ions across specific calcium channels in the cell membrane into smooth muscle cells of the heart (myocardium) and blood vessel walls (only arteries). Calcium is needed for smooth muscle cells to contract, so by blocking calcium channels, smooth muscle cells contraction is prevented. Diltiazem in Cardizem capsules 180mg blocks calcium channels in smooth muscle cells, allowing peripheral arteries to relax and widen (vasodilation) and this reduces the workload on the heart, the force needed for the heart to pump blood around the body (negative inotropic effect), increases oxygen supply to the heart, and decreases blood pressure. Cardizem capsules CD also causes widening of the main arteries of the heart, increasing the oxygen supply to the heart and, as the heart workload is reduced, the demand for oxygen is also reduced, which prevents chest pain symptoms of angina caused by lack of oxygen to the heart muscle.

What does Cardizem contain?

Cardizem capsules 180mg contain the active ingredient diltiazem hydrochloride, a calcium channel blocker used to treat hypertension and angina, formulated for slow release over a 24 hours period. They also contain fumaric acid, purified talc, non-pareil seeds (sucrose), colloidal silica, white beeswax, ethylcellulose, castor oil, stearic acid, methacrylic acid copolymers, tributyl acetylcitrate, simethicone, gelatin, Brilliant Blue FCF CI 42090 and titanium dioxide.

What doses of Cardizem are available?

Cardizem CD capsules are available online form Inhouse Pharmacy in 3 doses:
  • 120mg CDcapsule
  • 180mg CD capsules
  • 240mg CD capsules

Treating hypertension (high blood pressure) with Cardizem

Cardizem capsules 180mg contain diltiazem, a calcium channel blocker used to lower blood pressure in people with hypertension (high blood pressure at rest), who are at risk of cardiovascular disease due to high blood pressure, although there are usually no other symptoms. Cardizem capsules 180mg can either be used alone or in combination with other antihypertensive drugs such as diuretics. Diltiazem in Cardizem CD capsules 180mg blocks the inflow of calcium ions, needed for contraction, into smooth muscle cells of the heart and blood vessel walls (only arteries), which causes blood vessel walls to relax and peripheral arteries to widen. This action reduces the workload on the heart, which is the force needed for the heart to pump blood around the body, as measured by blood pressure. By lowering blood pressure Cardizem capsules 180mg help reduce risk of cardiovascular disease including stroke and heart attack.

Treating angina with Cardizem

Cardizem capsules 180mg contain diltiazem, a calcium channel blocker used to treat chronic stable angina and angina due to coronary artery spasm, which is an acute angina attack that can occur at rest. Diltiazem in Cardizem CD capsules 180mg blocks the inflow of calcium ions, needed for contraction, into smooth muscle cells of the heart and blood vessel walls (only arteries), which causes blood vessel walls to relax and peripheral arteries to widen. Cardizem capsules 180mg reduces the workload on the heart and its demand for oxygen, while at the same time increasing oxygen supply to the heart, which prevents chest pain symptoms of angina caused by lack of oxygen to the heart muscle.

What are the side effects of Cardizem?

The most commonly reported side effects when taking Cardizem capsules 180mg include: headache, dizziness, flushing, bradycardia (slow heart rate), gastrointestinal upset (nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhoea, indigestion, gastric pain) oedema (swelling of the ankles, feet, face or hands), flushing, palpitations, tiredness, weakness, drowsiness.

Nizonide (Nitazoxanide 500mg)

Nizonide general information

What is Nizonide used for?

Nizonide tablets 500mg are used to treat diarrhoea caused by infection with the parasitic protozoal (single cell) organism Giardia lamblia, causing Giardiasis or Cryptosporidium parvum, causing Cryptosporidiosis.  Both organisims live in the intestines and are passed in the faeces and can survive outside the body for long periods of time.  Infection is usually from food or water contaminated with faeces and is easily spread by contact and lack of good hygiene.  Symptoms of Giardiasis usually develop 9-15 days after infection and can last up to 6 weeks; they include diarrhoea, gas, greasy stools that tend to float, stomach or abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting and dehydration due to loss of fluids, although in some cases there are no symptoms.  Symptoms of cryptosporidiosis usually develop 2-10 after infection and last for 1-2 weeks; they include watery diarrhoea, stomach cramps or pain, dehydration, nausea, vomiting, fever and weight loss.  Nizonide tablets 500mg kill the parasite and relieve the symptoms of infection.

How does Nizonide work?

Nizonide tablets 500mg contain nitazoxanide, a thiazolide class of drug that has broad-spectrum anti-parasitic and antiviral activity, and is used as an antiprotozoal to treat giardiasis and cryptosporidiosis to relieve symptoms and clear up the parasitic infection.  Nitazoxanide in Nizonide tablets 500mg and its active metabolite tizoxanide are thought to work by interfering with an enzyme activity (pyruvate:ferredoxin oxidoreductase (PFOR) enzyme-dependent electron transfer reaction) that promotes conversion of specific chemicals into an energy source needed for survival of the protozoal parasite.  This action of nitazoxanide in Nizonide tablets 500mg inhibits growth of the parasite, which kills the parasite and prevents spread of infection, allowing symptoms of infection to clear up for both giardiasis and cryptosporidiosis.  Nizonide tablets 500mg are effective for larval as well as adult stages of the lifecycle and are effective within 3 days of treatment.

Newven (Desvenlafaxine 100mg)

Newven general information

What is Newven used for?

Newven tablets 100mg are used to treat major depression and symptoms of depressive illness, including anxiety, loss of interest in usual activities, disturbed sleep, change in appetite, fatigue, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, difficulty thinking or concentrating, and recurrent thoughts of suicide.  Newven tablets 100mg are also used to treat other mood disorders that affect daily activities and relationships with others including, social anxiety disorder (Social Phobia), panic disorder (panic attacks) and generalised anxiety disorder.   Newven tablets 100mg help manage the emotional and physical symptoms of depression to help improve ability to function at work, in family and social life and in leisure activities.

How does Newven work?

Newven tablets 100mg contain desvenlafaxine which is the active metabolite of venlafaxine, an antidepressant belonging to the class of drugs known as Serotonin-Noradrenaline Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRIs) but is structurally and chemically different to other antidepressants.  Desvenlafaxine in Newven tablets 100mg acts in the brain to correct the chemical imbalance caused by a lack of certain neurotransmitters (brain chemical that allows nerve cells to communicate) that is thought to be one of the major causes of depression and other mood disorders, particularly a lack of serotonin, which controls many body activities, including regulating mood.  Desvenlafaxine is a potent inhibitor of the reuptake of serotonin and noradrenaline, and also weakly inhibits dopamine reuptake, which means that it blocks the re-uptake of serotonin and noradrenaline from the synapse (the gap between nerve cells across which chemical messages are sent from one nerve cell to another).  If the re-uptake of serotonin and noradrenaline by the first nerve cell (pre-synaptic) is blocked, this means that there is more neurotransmitter remaining for the receiving nerve cell (post-synaptic), which allows nerve cells to communicate with each other for longer.  The action of Newven tablets 100mg helps relieve symptoms of depression and other mood disorders by increasing the amount of serotonin and noradrenaline in the brain, which in turn increases stimulation of nerve pathways that control mood.  Newven tablets 100mg are formulated so that desvenlafaxine is released slowly into the digestive system for extended-release of the medication, to allow for a single dose per day.

Itrazole 100mg (Itraconazole)

Itrazole general information

What is Itrazole used for?

Itrazole capsules 100mg are used to treat a variety of superficial and systemic fungal infections in various parts of the body. Fungal infections that Itrazole 100 is used for include:
  • Persistent infections of the skin with pityriasis versicolor, which caused by the yeast-like fungus malassezia and characterised by rash and patches of flaky skin on the trunk, neck or arms.
  • Persistent infections with the fungus tinea (also called ringworm) in various parts of the body including the body (tinea corporis), foot (tinea pedis) and groin (tinea cruris or jock itch).
  • Candidiasis (thrush) of the mucus membranes such as in the mouth and vagina, also of the skin.
  • Persistent infections of the vagina with the yeast candida (candidiasis).
  • Infection of the nail (onychomycosis) with yeast or dermatophyte fungi like tinea.
  • Fungal keratitis, an infection of the cornea of the eye by mould fungi like aspergillus or the yeast Candida, resulting in inflammation.
  • Systemic fungal infections that can affect internal organs such as histoplasmosis a rare systemic fungal infection from inhalation of a soil fungus into the lung causing flu-like symptoms; also aspergillosis, a lung infection caused by breathing in spores of the mould fungus aspergillus. These systemic fungal infections are more common in people who are immunocompromised.

How does Itrazole work?

Itrazole capsules 100mg contain itraconazole broad-spectrum antifungal drug belonging to the triazole group of antifungals. Itraconazole in Itrazole capsules 100mg is a potent and specific inhibitor of fungal enzymes necessary for the synthesis of ergosterol, an important component of fungal cell membrane that is not found in animal cells. A lack of ergosterol weakens the fungal cell membrane, causing the cell contents to leak out, which kills the fungus. This prevents the infection from spreading, relieving symptoms caused by the infection, including, itching and inflammation.

What does Itrazole contain?

Itrazole capsules 100mg contain the active ingredient itraconazole a broad-spectrum antifungal drug, used to treat and prevent a variety of fungal infections. They also contain sugar spheres, hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose, sorbitan stearate, hydrated silica colloidal, titanium dioxide, red iron oxide and gelatin and opacode S-1-7078 White.

Treating fungal infections with with Itrazole

Itrazole capsules 100mg contain itraconazole, a broad-spectrum antifungal drug that is used to treat a wide range of superficial and systemic fungal infections, caused by a variety of susceptible fungal species. Itrazole capsules 100mg specifically inhibit the synthesis of ergosterol, an important component of fungal cell membrane, which kills the fungus and stops it spreading; relieving the itching, scaling and other more severe symptoms caused by the fungal infection. Fungal infections that can be treated with Itrazole capsules 100mg include:
  • Persistent infections of the skin with pityriasis versicolor, which caused by the yeast-like fungus malassezia and characterised by rash and patches of flaky skin on the trunk, neck or arms.

These systemic fungal infections are more common in people who are immunocompromised.

Itrazole for thrush

Itrazole capsules 100mg contain itraconazole, a synthetic broad-spectrum antifungal agent that is used to treat a variety of fungal infections including thrush or candidiasis, which is caused by the yeast candida albicans. Although any site on the body can become infected with candida, including the gastrointestinal tract, the most common site of infection are the mucous membranes of the mouth and vagina, with symptoms including creamy/white lesions or discharge and itching or irritation. Itrazole capsules 100mg specifically inhibit the synthesis of ergosterol, an important component of fungal cell membrane, which kills the fungus and stops it spreading. In this way Itrazole capsules 100mg relieves the symptoms of thrush in all its locations, and prevents constant reinfection in chronic recurrent vaginal thrush.
